The work of connecting subscribers 'to t£e temporary telephone exchange at Napier is being carried out as expedatiouslv aa possible (says an exchange). At tho present time 250 subscribers are connected, and 3SO are awaiting connection. The cables to the Awatoto ana Wharerangi road areas Have been repaired, and subscribers in these areas will be joined up at an early date. The cable to "Westshore is still out of action, and it will bo some time before it is restored, owing to the sorvice damage sustained, along the embankment and on the bridgo. # Telephones aro now being installed in the slot cabinets for free use of the public until all possible subscribers are reconnected. These telephones arc-not available for toll calls. Rapid strides arc also being made in the installing;of the COO telephones that are to form the complete temporary exchange for Hastings until the automatic service is in operation. The second edition of the telephone directory has now been issued, and shows 420 subscribers connected. This is'an addition of 133 telephone connections since 4th March.
