EVANS BAY SWIM
PECK SHIELD CONTEST
The first competition for the Peck' Sliield was held cm Saturday afternoon, when forty competitors participated in » swim across Evans Bay and back. .Tin winners were the Maranui A team. A fine shield was presented last year by, Messrs. Peck and Son, London, for com* petition among clubs affiliated to the Wellington Swimming Centre. The shield is competed for by teams of fonv, but any club may enter six swimmers, the .first four finishing constituting the team. The course used on Saturday, was'from the bathing sheds on the western side or the bay to the nearest point on the Miramar Wharf, and back, a distance of about one and a-half miles. Six swimmers did not reach the wharf, and ten retired when half the journey was completed. Thar water was very cold. . . .•-.. L. Dawkins (9min), of the Lyall Ba.*; Club, was the first to complete the course, his swimming time being 48m in 46sec. C. Claridge, the scratch man, made fasten* time, 41min 12sec. J. Newport (14min).
