A KINDERGARTEN EFFORT

Saturday might well bo called a perfect clay, for not only was the weather ideal, but tlio various efforts made toe

good causes benefited largely, no doubt assisted by tho fact that people "made for the open," and garden fetes were extremely popular. That held at the rcsidenco of Mr. and Mrs. Hope Gibbons in their beautiful grounds at Lyall Bay was very largely attended, with the gratifying result that something over £100 will bo added to tho funds of tho Free Kindergartens, the expenses amounting to only a small sum. Her Excellency Lady Bledisloe was present, and declared tho fete open. She was accompanied by Mrs. Bathurst. Mrs. H. Gibbs received Her Excellency, in tho unavoidable absence of the president (Mrs. W. E. Davidson), and a tour of the stalls was made. There were many amusements, and much interest was displayed in the fine exhibitiond of club-swinging by groups of girls from the V.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A. under supervision of Captain Duffy. The guests found plenty to do, and a great many garden lovers received special pleasure from the beauty of the borders and trees. Afternoon tea was a delightful feature, and was set in the garden, with a lovely view of the sea and hills. Those in charge of stalls were:—Flowers, Mrs. Millar, Miss Crawford, and Miss Seaton; fancy, Mrs. Petersen, Mrs. Eichelbaum, Mrs. Heron; coconut shy, Mr. W. J. Gray; Aunt Sally, Mr. Norman Gibbons; ice cream, Kindergarten students; afternoon tea, students and directors, organised by Mrs. Dowsett, Mr. Davidson, Mr. Kilsby, and other helpers from Toe II; parcel lady, Miss M. Hempton.
