DROWNING ACCIDENT
MAN FALLS FROM ROCKS
DIFFICULT RESCUE EFFORTS
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) TAURANGA, This Day. About 4 o'clock yesterday afternooni the Surf Club siren at Mt. Maunganul called rescuers to Ocean Beach. Mr. Francis Irwin, aged 65, of 704, Manu- ; kau road, Royal Oak, who had joined his son's family from Hamilton for a. holiday at the Mount, had fallen front the rocks while fishing at what is known as the "blow hole",on Moturiki Island, close to the beach.: There was some delay in getting tha reel across the precipitous track, soAubrey Courtenay ran ahead, dived in, and caught hold of Mr. Irwin. When, the party arrived they found Courtenay; and Irwin some two hundred yards from the shore. Mr. Irwin was unconscious^ and Courtenay almost exhausted, fighting the tide rip. Douglas Kimber' went out with a lifeline, and relieved Courtenay of his burden. All three wer* drawn ashore, Kimber being badly, bruised on the rocks. Resuscitation on Mr,. Irwin was tried for two hours, Nurses Brookes and Morris and Miss Herd taking a prominent part, but when D . Eandell, of Te Puke, arrived, he found that tha man was dead. The Coroner is -holding an inquest this morning. The body is to be sent to Auckland. The deceased leaves four sons and two, daughters. He was born in Armagh,Ireland, and resided in Auckland iot, fifty years.
