HELPING HANDS

The "Wellington Provincial Council of the Licensed Trade has voted £1000 to the Hawkes Bay Belief Fund. In view of the need for immediate help, the council has forwarded a cheque for £200 to Mr. Morse, of Napier, and a cheque for £200 to Mr. G. F. Roach, of Hastings,, chairmen of tho Citizens' Relief Committees in those towns. The International Order of Good Templars has arranged an attractive concert programme, to be presented in St. Thomas's Hall, Newtown, on Wednesday next, at 7.45 p.m. A public meeting, under the auspices of tho Seatoun and Bays' Progressive Association and the Civic League, will bo held on Monday, at S p.m., in the Public School, Seatoun. There should be a largo attendance at the Town Hall Concert Chamber next Wednesday, when the Wellington Burns Club wiil hold its first concert and address. Mr. James Craigie, the only pcrmauent resident in Now Zealand, who is a president of tho World Federation of Burns Clubs will be the speaker. The musical programing will bo given by well-known local artis.ts. Ever since- tho earthquake baudsof women from St. John's Presbyterian Church have been working from morning to night every day making garments for tho relief of the sufferers in tho calamity. The Wellington Players, under Miss Elizabeth Blake, will provido an entertainment in aid-of the earthquake fund in tho Y.W.C.A. Hair on 25th and 26th February. The bill selected is a charming one. Once more the public are to be permitted to see that, cheerful farcial whimsy of Hans Andersen, "The. Tinder Box," which was so favourably] received wlien done by the players last j year; and that charming playlet, by A. A. Milne, "The, Artist," which has embodied iv its fanciful oddity all the tickling philosophy of it's brilliant author. Madame Merlin will sing unusual Eussian songs, and little Paula Matthews will recite poems: Tho box plan.is at. the Bristol. A Sunday night talkie programme with "Madame X". as the feature will be presented at the Kilbirnie Kinema to-morrow night, the entire proceeds going to the Mayor's earthquake relief fund. Ruth Chatterton is the star of "Madame X." An attractive list of supports is billed. TOWN HALL CONCERT. Tho Wellington public is conspicuously a music-loving one) and it is also very responsive to a'"cause that needs assistance"; so that a very large audience may be anticipated at the concert to bo given- in tho Town Hall next Monday evening in ■ aid.of the .Earthquake' Relief Fund. This concbrt is under Vice-Regal and 'Mayoral patron-, age. Under the direction of Messrs. Victor S. Lloyd and Leon do Mauny. an- unusually interesting selection of items by accomplished artists has been arrangod. OECHBSTRAL BENEFIT CONCERT ■ Among the special entertainments being organised in aid of. the earthquake relief funds is fi. special concert to bo given by the Wellington Symphony Orchestra, next Saturday evening, in the Town Hall. The offer of this concert, has been accepted by the Mayor, and their Excellencies Lord and Lady Bleclisloc have accepted tin invitation to be present.

The programme is a most attractive one, consisting- wholly of well-known and popular items. The orchestra will play the "Raymond" Overture (Thomas); Eaehmaninoff's Prelude in C Sharp Minor; Three Dances from Edward German's "Nell Gwynn"; Tschaikovsky's Waltz, "Sleeping Beauty"; Elgar's march "Pomp and Circumstance"; and tho famous "1812" Overture of Tschaikovsky. The "1812"Overture is always a great attraction; it is one of the most picturesque of compositions, and works up to a tremendous climax. To provide the large effects of this work the orchestra will be assisted by the Port Nicholson Silver Band, and there will be altogether 95 performers. Mr. Bernard Page will play the Town Hall organ. Tho programme will include vocal items by Mrs. Amy Woodward (soprano), Miss Hilda Chudley (contralto), and Mr. H. F. Wood (tenor). Popular prices will be charged and seats may be booked on and after Monday.
