PASSED BY SENATE

VETERANS' LOAN RELIEF BILL

HOOVER'S VETO^LIKELY TO BE IN VAIN

WASHINGTON, 19th February. The Senate, despite President Hoover's opposition, passed by 72 votes to 12 the Veterans' Loan Belief Bill, which will adjust compensation certificates from 22J'to 50 per cent, on their face value. The Bill already has been passed by the House. The estimated cost is 700,000,000 dollars. President Hoover is expected to veto the Bill within, forty-eight hours, but virtually it is a foregone conclusion that Congress will pass the Bill over th? veto.

Senator Heed (Pennsylvania), admiting that the Bill would pass, supported President Hoover vigorously. He asked: "Why under heaven in times of stress should we pour out money for the benefit of a particular group at the expense of every other group?". .
