AMBULANCE SERVICE

THE FINANCIAL OUTLOOK

"A LEAN PROSPECT"

The monthly meeting of the Wellington Free Ambulance Board was held today. Mr. C. J. B. Norwood presided. The chariman said that the receipts for January amounted to £304 3s lid, and the expenditure was £413 14s Bd. He thought members would realise that the board, like other bodies, would have a lean time, and the contributions must necessarily be less. The time had come for rigid economy, in order- to try and meet the altered conditions. The board could not trench in any way on its building fund for the ordinary running expenses. So far as the future finances were concerned, they could only hope for the best. Mr. J. H. Whittaker: "I wonder if the local bodies could help us if they knew the state of our finances?" Mr. G. Mitchell said there was a tenilency amongst local bodies to curtail their expenditure, and thereby lighten the burden on tho ratepayers. Mr. M. Marks expressed the opinion that if any local body intimated its intention to reduce its contribution, the board could then ask it to reconsider the position. The chairman said he felt sure Mr. Whittaker's suggestion would be borne in mind by the local bodies. Mr. Mitchell did not think there would be any reduction of contributions on the part of local bodies. The chairman stated that His Excellency the Governor-General recently visited tho central station of the Free Ambulance and showed deep interest in the work.
