SYDNEY TURF
LEGER COLTS IN ACTION
(Prom "Vedette.") SY.D.NBY, 12th Fc-bruury. Racing at Kosehill on Saturday was brimful of interest in more ways than ouo. There were sonic really Rood performances, but on occasions there were some peculiar affairs which were not challenged by tho remaining stipendiary stewards. Both Messrs. M'Mahon and Coornbes are away on sick leave, and, judging by recent happenings, the former will be missed rather badly. The oustanding performances-at Rosehill were the wins of Veilmond and Attar, both three-year-olds. Veilmond (Limond —Veil) carried topweight (9.4) in the Three-Year-Old Handicap. M'Carten had him hopelessly placed, shut-in on the rails less than a furlong from the post. Pulled to the outside, he gallop; ed past the opposition to win going away. He mustered up a brilliant burst of speed. George Price takes him south next Saturday to run in the Victorian St. Leger. Attar beat only a welter field at nine furlongs, but, as at Bandwick, his gameness pulled him through. Tackled halfway down the straight he fought off all his challengers and was a head to the good at the finish. Ho has attracted universal attention, and even in these hard times one or two have tried to buy him, but he is not for sale. ANOTHER ST. IEGER COLT. B. O'Donnell gave his Derby winner, Balloon King, his first run sinco the spring at Bosehill. The distance, a mile, was too short, and in addition he carried a 71b penalty, and actually had to give lib to the well-performed Wangoola, who won rather decisively. Balloon King ran a really good race into third place, and will be in great order for the St. Leger when taken to Melbourne later on. Aussie has had two runs since returning from his spell in" New Zealand, and finished last in both races. ' He has filled that inglorious position for seven consecutive races in Sydney. Strangely enough he gallops well on,the track. Brazenfaco,-one of the fanejed Sydney horses for autumn handicaps, had a run at Bosehill. He finished fourth after having none of the luck of tho race. His Melbourne engagements include the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield, and the V.E.C. Newmarket Handicap. J. Munro has announced his engagemerit to ride Holdfast in the Newmarket Handicap. His services appear to have been obtained by wireless before he landed in Australia on his way home from Germany. NEW ZEALAND^BRED WINNER. Intrepid, a winner at Menangle on Tuesday, is a three-year-old by Weathervane from Historiettc. He registered a useful performance, and may be a fair stake-earner. AVeatherbound, also a three-year-old by Weathervane, from Bonaria, finished fifth in the same event. The Paper Money—Piquant ; twq-year-old Dollar. Princess should have opened her ■winning account at .Menangle. Tho winner, Herolago (by Heroic), laid over on her over the last furlong and she was beaten by a narrow margin. Dollar Princess carries the Phar Lap colours. The deputation from the bookmakers which waited on the Chief Secretary (Mr. Gosling) lust week received an unexpectedly good hearing. It asked for a reduction of tho 10 per cent, betting tax to 2J por cent, and a.substitution of 1 per cent, turnover tax for the present ticket tax paid by bookmakers. This latter is a considerable concession on tho part of the leading layers, who at all times naturally have opposed a turnover tax of any kind. Mr. J. O'Dca, who spoke for tho deputation, pointed out tho many bye-products of racing which gave employment. Mr. Gosling promised consideration by the Government. Country racing clubs have been the hardest hit by the tax on account of short prices which' usually prevail. Three clubs have announced this week the abandonment of meetings.
