Association iou!d not have been favoured with a more perfect day for the opening of its l'ortylourth annual Show yesterday. .Show day in thc'Wairanipa 'is oue day of the year which the people of the district look iorivard to, and although Tuesday is rather an off-day for the public, there Mas a fair attendance. Coloured parasols—tie day -was very warm—and summer t rocks and apparel'save the Solway Show Grounds a carnival appearance, which was enhanced considerably by the amusement stands, stalls, and decorations customary on such an occasion. The side-shows were numerous and were patronised trcely. .Despite the present financial stress and perplexity, there was evidence over the whole ground of an intention to make the Show notable and worthy of the province. -An air of cheerfulness prevailed, and the ninny tasks peculiar to the first day ol a big show proceeded according to sched- " The "rounds in the forenoon presented a busy scene, judges and stewards being fully occupied in selecting proc-winmng stock. Although the entries this year were fewer than last year's, the quality of the stock exhibited was well up to .standard, and competition m all classes was very keen. . . A feature of the Show this year is the fine exhibition of farm machinery and motor-cars. . The entries total .22j0. as against -i-j----la*t year. The -judging was followed with keen iu--1 crest by exhibitors and visitors alike. Jne ilog trials and ring events, which weic well patronised, provided interesting entertainment. GOOD SHOW OF SHEEP. Tho sheep pens were filled with attractive siioclraeus. The quality of the stock in tlio freezing classes was excellent, and tlio judge, .Mr. J. Webb, said that they compared favour--:ibly wltli those exhibited at any other sliow in .Vow Zealand. The fat lambs, he suid, were of a particularly high standard... They were -the best he had judged so far In the Walrnrapa. la tho Corrledalo breed coraiictltiou was restricted to >V. Jlnyner (Jlasterton) and J. Stringfellow (Gi-oytown). Both breeders. brought, forward attractive sheep and the display waa a strong one. The former, exhibited the champion and reserved champion rams, and the latter the champion and reserved champion cives. In the Southdown (ojicn classes). points were piliiod by Ellis Bros. (Bulls) with the champion ram, reserved champion ewe, tour firsts, and threo seconds; .1. Knight (Feilding) champion owe. reserved champion ram, and five seconds. The best pen of two-tooth node rams was exhibited by A. H. Thompson (CarTiiigton). The champion unhoused Southdown ram and ewe were exhibited by A. 11. Falloon (Uasterton), ond tiie reserve champion ram l>y '.V. G. Bayner (Masterton). Mr. J'alloon also exhibited the reserved champion ewe. Other awards in the Southdown classes went to W. G. Johnston (Lower Hutt), G. F. Candy (Mas-ter-ton), W. Howard Booth (Cartertou), 11. \V. Leo and Son (Masterton). K. M. Perry (Jla.stcrt.on), and I). J. Cooper (Masterton). There was a good showing of Llncolns. .A. It. Jl'Mastec (Featherston) exhibited the champion and reserved champion rams, and also gained three seconds. Other winners were \V. M'Kay (Masterton), ono second. CATTLE SECTION. Tho entries in the cattlo sections, although not as large as previous years, wcro very good from the point oC view of quality. Tho Jersey breed is making good progress in tho Waira'rapa, and the standard of exhibits in this section WR3 excellent. The entries wero not as large as they should have been, but the task of tho judge (Mr. P. J. Feterscn) •was hy no means lightened. The champion bull was exhibited by J. L. Heckler (Ihuriuia), and tho reserved champion by W. H. Booth and Son (Carterton), who also showed tho champion and reserved champion cow. Tho honours In the Hereford section went to }. Jl'Kenzle (Masterton), who exhibited the champion and reserved champion bull, and champion heifer. He was tho only exhibitor In the Hereford classes. J. Ogilvy (Gladstone) exhibited the champion nnd reserved champion bull and cow in the Polled Angus classes. Tho champion Ayrshire bull was exhibited by G. Braztmdale (Matarawa), and the reserved champion by W. Moore and Son' (Homeliush). Moore and Son also exhibited the champion and reserved champion cows in this section. Tuere were good entries in tho Fricsian breed. The honours went to O. A. Cadwallader (Greytown), who exhibited the champion bull, and estate of W. f>. Gallon (Carterton) which exhibited the reserved champion. The champion vow was shown by E. Knutaon (Dalclleld), and the reserved champion heifer by O. Cadwallader. In the fat cattle section the champion bullock was shown' by J. A. Betts (Masterton). Wins in tho dairyr cattle section wero secured by T. A. B. Sinclair-(Woodvlllc), four firsts, two seconds; TV. Perry (Masterton), one first, one second; Miss M. Moore (Homcbush). one flrst, ono second; H. M'Manawriy (Carterton), one first; E. Jlyan (Masterton), ono second; T. B. Heapy (Grcytowu), one second. Successful exhibitors in tlio ]ilg-sections were T. B. Heapy (Greytown). M'Govern Bros. (Mauriceville), B. O'XelU (Solway), W. H, Bird (Mauriceville), H. Rayner (Cartorton), .1. Stringfellow (Greytown), Mrs. O. A. M'Donald (Mauriceville). L. I.i Falrbrother (Carterton). Tho produce, horticultural, dogs, poultry, and horse exhibits wore all well patronised. The Show was continued to-day.

The Huia Aerated Water Co., of ifasterton, conducted all the booths at the Solway Show just closed to-night, and the great measure- of popularity earned by Mr. Thomson, the manager, and his staff, could be gauged by the 'mormons quantities of their thirstquenchers sold. Tho Huia Co. have certainly made raid strides during the past two years or so, and if the truth must bo told, it is owing to tho high quality of the .-ingredients used, and tho scrupulous care taken in tho manufacture of their beverages that has created tho big demand. It would be impossible to single nut any particular drink for special mention, but if there is a better one than the firm's dry ginger ale the •writer would like to try it! Mr. Thomson, the manager, is a great worker, and one of tho most popular men in the district, with a thorough knowledge of tho trade, and he certainly uses it in the interests of the Huia Co.

The excellent attendance at Solway j during the show period must have been particularly struck with tho splendid | exhibit of motor-cars wade by the wellknown iirm of T. Wagg and Co., Ltd. This firm, aro recognised as tlio pioneers in tho motoring trade of tho Wairarapa, and certainly give great servico to those -whose business necessitates them having the best and most reliable form of motor traction. Tlio linn's permanent stand was brimful with tlio very latest Buick and Chevrolet cars and trucks; and much interest was created by tin; display made. The Chevrolet was shown in all the latest models, including the fabric sedan, club sedan, roadster de luxe, "Wontworth sedan, and a useful 30ewt truck. Taking into consideration the perfected construction of these vehicles, and the extremely low running cost, tho price of the Chevrolet is very low, ami well within the reach of the average farmer or business man. Messrs. Wagg nnd Co., Ltd., have been so long associated with the motor trade that it is reasonable to assume that! their selection of agencies would be a good recommendation for the purchaser to follow, aud another important point to remember when buying a ear is, are you going to get good service? This can be absolutely assured in dealing with Wagg and Co., for their garage in Queen street, Masterton, is equipped in tho most up-to-date manner for adjustments and repairs, including upholstering, painting, and body making.' Tho firm's bowser station has ten pumps, from which the best brands of petrol arc procurable night and day at the lowest cash prices. LAn organisation worthy of the important Wairavapa district is at your command. You cannot get better treatment anywhere, it is therefore in motorists1' own interests to make Waggs their headquarters for new cars, accessories, oils, etc., and fair dealing is assured.
