(Eeceived 17th February, 2 p.m.) LONDON, 16th February. In the House of Commons the Minister of Labffur, Miss Margaret Bond' field, moving an increase in the Uncnw ployed Insurance Fund's borrowing powers by £.20,000,000, admitted that the country couia not yet be assured that the peak of unemployment had been reached. The Insurance Fund's debt was now £67,000,000, and the proposed new loan would be exhausted in July unless unemployment substantially decreased. Other countries had worse unemployment. Germany had 4,765,000, and the United States, on a conservative estimate, had six millions totally unemployed, and 4,500,000 partially unemployed, excluding agriculture.

As an instance of the displacement of labour by amalgamation and new machinery, Miss Bondfield .pointea out that during the last half-year dyeing amalgamations had thrown fifteen hundred men out of work. . Evcnthe banks had installed machines enabling women to do the work of 311 male clerks.
