SATURDAY'S CRICKET
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ■ : ■ .' NELSON, 16th. February. A seven-roomed' dwelling in Kawai stroot, owned by Mr. H. A. York, Kawai atroct, and occupied by Mr. J. Davis, was burned to the, ground soon after 5 o'clock ou> Sunday afternoon. The house was insured for £550 in the Sun Office. However, the furniture and personal effects of the Davis family were not insured, and they have only those clothes which they wore when the fire occurred. The most recent of events connected with forestry research in New Zealand is the formation of a forest biological research station at the Cawthron Institute. The station was made possible by tho Timber Growers' Association, and the State Forest Department in conjunction with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Dr. Miller, chief entomologist at the Cawthron Institute, who recently returned from a visit to America and Europe, whero he investigated problems connected with tho control of forostry pests, will be in chargo of tho work. At tho present time Dr. Miller's work embraces forest zoology and forost mycology. The Research Station will be officially opened by the Hon. H, Atmore on Thursday next. Last Saturday . the Nelson Defence Rifle Club met the Motueka Defence Rifle Club in a friendly match fired on the Wakapuaka range, the conditions being eight mon aside, each to flro seven shots and two optional sightcrs at 300, 500, and 600 yards ranges. Some very fino shooting was done by some of- tho Nelson men, the most notable being President F. Sharland, who socured tho coveted century—the first to be scored on the Wakapuaka range, the previous highest scorers being Riflemen S. Barnett and H. Frank, who each secured 99 on the same- day in Juno, 1926. S. Barnett again secured a 99 early this season. F. Gledhill is in excellent form, and his 98 was a very fine effort. Riflemen Manssen, ' Barnctt, Bussoll, and Dixon all shot consistently and compiled useful scores of 97, 96, 94, and 94 respectively. Tho Nelson A team beat Nelson B by 49 points. The B team scored 16 more points than Motueka. Rifleman A. Ray, of tho Motueka team, secured 35 on tho 600 range, probably the first possible ever scored over 600 yards at Wakapuaka.
The first Newman Shield cricket match of tho season was played at "Wakeflcld, Nelson City challenging Waimea. The holders won by 104 runs. la theJJrst innings Waimea made 275 runs (R. Papps 36, M.- Jenkins 57, A. Newman 21, N. Hawkes 23, It. Davics 28, K. Lines 57, not out). K. Kalfe took three wickets for 32 runs. Nelsoa replied with 313, of which E. E. Neale scored 169, not out, after opening the innings. B. Karsten was the only other Nelson player to reach the twenties. "Extras", scored 57.; Davies took three wickets for 51 runs, and. K. Lines three for 60. Waimea again _ scored well in the second innings, their total reaching 276 (Jenkins 57, A. Newman 56, K. Lines 47). Seven Nelson bowlers were tried, each one taking one or two wickets. Nelson commenced their second innings with 239 runs'to get for a win, but could only manage 125, of which Neale scored 47. N. Hawkes was in deadly form with the ball, taking five wickets for 11 runs in 13 overs. Old Boys Colts and "Wakatu''completed their championship match on Saturday, Colts winning on the first innings by 11 runs. Wakatu scored 120 and Colts 141. In their second strike the Wa: katn batsmen collared the bowling, putting on 255 runs for five wickets (Jones 100, not out, Marshall 66). Jones and Marshall put on a partnership of 114 for the fourth wicket, 240 runs being scored in 120 minutes. With two hours to bat and 244 runs to get, Colts decided to attempt to play out time. In ,tTiis they were successful. Their score was 83 for six wickets when stumps were drawn. B. Langbein took four wickets for 15 runs.
