FAST TIMES AT. PETONE
A-perfect evening: with a light northerly breeze, aud the worthiness of the object of the meeting,, attracted a crowd of over 2000 to the Petdne Oval last night. An extensive programme of running and cycling event? drew good fields, and the earthquake relief funds should \., benefit well from the effort.' Throughout, times were fast, some being better than standnrd. In the 100 yards handicap event J. B. Stephenson, a University man, ran the final in 9 3-ssec, which was excellent, even considering the following wind. The halfmile .open handicap was won by J. O. Watt in' lmin 55 4-ssec, stnd Ogg.'s time of lmin 57sec was worthy of praise. G. Bayne was feeling.the effects of his .previous run in the mile, and finished a rather poor third behind Price and Barn, both long handicap men. All except the placed men had dropped out before the last Jap. had commenced. ■ An event of considerable interest was a special quarter-mile scratch race between T. Pickering and J. Fleming to decide who should be the Wellington representative to the Dominion champion-; ships at 'Duriedin; It- was a: disappointing race, and the > time was not good for a provincial representative. .There was_ a poor field in the half-mile walk, in which the Dominion champion, A. K. Hill, and the veteran walker, Jackson Da vies, were the only starters. The latter, though well on in years, can still show ' some points in style and action to younger walkers. Hill" conceded' a handicap of 400 yards, and had to walk out to beathis opponent. > Events which attracted a large number of competitors were the 220 yards open and the half-mile. D. M'Nichol, the Olympic runner, won the furlong sprint in 21 3-ssec. - \ The cycling events proved very interesting. Gane won both the one and threemile races. , •■ ■ ■ ;
