UPPER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL
The fortnightly meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. P. Robertson) presided, and there were also present Councillors E W. Cottle, C. L. A. Spearman, A. Howell, J. Blewman, W. Greig, M. H. Hood, and G. H. Guthrie. Permission was granted the Wellington Free Ambulance to hold a street day m the borough on 13th March. , The recently-formed Upper Hutt branch of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association gave notice of its intention to take control of the Anzao Day services tins year and to form a local committee for that purpose. Councillor Hood was appointed by the council to represent it on the committee. . The need of the Upper Hutt Fire Brigade for some means of conveyance to fires was urged upon the council by a deputation from the brigade, introduced by Councillor Guthrie. Superintendent WakeJin said that the brigadesmen wanted a motor truck to carry themselves and their gear to fires. "At present we go on anything that likes to pick us up," he said. The council decided to make provision on the forthcoming estimates for the purchase of a truck with the idea o£ using it at Silverstream when eventually a fire engine is procured for Upper Hutt. The Mayor reported that 100 men were employed in the borough under the No. 5 scheme on cleaning the cemetery and the park and on making the track to the waterworks reserve.
