ATHLETICS
DOINGS OF AMERICANS
NEW PLYMOUTH VICTORIES
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
NEW PLYMOUTH, 15th February. Brilliant victories in. the mile and 109 yards, and superiority in field events, wera achieved by the American athtletes, G. Simpson, E. Kiser, and A. Rothert, at New Plymouth last night.
With the magnificent distance of 30ft 4^in, Eothert put the shot further by; V/z inches than he had done previously; in New Zealand. This is 4ft 2%in better; than the present New Zealand record, which Eothert has already passed on several occasions.
Only inches separated Simpson and S. A. Black (New Plymouth) at the conclusion of a thrilling 100 yards. Bounding like a shot from the scratch mark, the American rapidly passed the men in front, but Black was tenacious. He, too, went through the field. Excitement was intense when it seemed he might defeat Simpson, but in a gruelling finish he could not improve his position sufficiently, and the American touched the tape a fraction of a second ahead of him. Simpson's tima was lOsec.
The final of the 220 yards provided ft magnificent race. Black and Simpson left the five-yard and scratch mark respectively like shots from a gun.,.. Simpson wal behind the field at the top of the straight. Black spurted desperately, and drew ahead of the others, but Simpson was coming fast, and lessened the lead to two yards. Black hung on to win by that distance, Simpson gaining nothing over the last 29 yards. The good time of 22sec was made.
E. Rose (New Plymouth) did not start in the half-mile, as it was his intention, to reserve his strength to contend the mile with Kiser. The sight of Kiser winning the mile run 50 yards ahead of Rose, in the good time of 4min 22 2-ssee, will long be remembered. Conceding long handicaps*, S. Lay, British Empire champion, threw the javelin 201 ft from scratch, but this was not far enough to overcome the handicap of 27 feet added to the throw of 176 feet 4 inches by Rothert, who thus gained first place.
