CUP TO SIR MOND
HOXITOJtf WIXS jSPKLNT
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") ', " •-EOTOIIUA, Wth February. Glorious sveathor i'avourcd the opening of the.Rotorua Tutcing Club's Meeting today, and apme keen racing was witnessed. The totaljsatpr.figures dropped by IC-ISIX 10s, beinrt^ilS/JSI, against £20,7U2 10s. HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. \r;ilcuir,: Sub-Editor, and Smithlield were bcrit backed for the J'ohutu High weight | Handicap, '/aiid ' they lilled the places in j the order.in. which they were backed. Muss-1 qtiin received.the worst of the start, Wako King and'.Cristobel leading out from Ssmilhfielil.. y'nd Valcuir. \Vith three furlongs 'covered -"Yalcuii1 went up to Wako King, and' th?'others bunched up. Once -into the straight Valcuir drew out slightly and stalled off a challenge from Sub-Editor to win by a length. SmitbUeld wart running on in third place, and iStcady Fire was fourth. Valcuir won nicely, but neither SubEditor, who. drew the extreme outside, nor Smithfield had' the best of the running. Smithfield was stopped on the rails at the turn, and taken back to second to last. WAIMANGU STAKES. .Protonjint was a slightly better favourite thau •Silniie- i'or the Waimangu Stakes, and he justified tho support by finishing stoutly from Gay .Lap. Searcher and Fraser were, first-away, Searcher and Gay Lap soon drawing clear of Miss Tirau and Protoinint. As soon as they straightened up Tinker drew the stick on Protomint, and he responded splendidly, to beat Gay Lap by a length and a half. Searcher was the same■ distance back third, and Silene was fourth. The wanner had to be ridden with the whip to get a position early, and then ran on at-the finish in the style of a very nstefnl' horse. Guy. Lap displayed fine speed, and Miss Tirau also shewed pace. Silene, who was near the outside at the start, was outpaced eariy, and could make very little impression. THE MOKOIA HANDICAP. Tetrarchate was £100 better fancied than Ti Tree for the Mokoia Handicap. Ti Tree had a slight call over Yoliniond. Tetrarchate: was squeezed back at the start, Liona being in front quickly from Brilliant Lady and Black Maire. Near the four ' furlongs powt Tetrarehate went through on the rails to be in charge at the top, where Volimond moved up on the outside and Ti Tree made a move on the rails. Tetrarchate carried. Volimoud out in the run home, and Ti Tree came through on the rails to win by a length and a half from Volimond, who beat Tetrarehate by a.similar .margin.- Liona was fourth and ( Black Maire fifth. The . run of the race favoured Ti Tree, who had.a beautiful passage on the rails. Volimond would probably have won only for Ti Tree getting the run on the rails. GREAT FINISH IN CUP. Two lightweights, Sir Mond and Clopton, fought out a great finish in the Eotorua Cup, and. Sir Mond gained the verdict, by a head. Once the field had settled down Clopton was in command from Mosque..Standfast, and Lucky Alice. Clopton carried the field along until reaching the home turn, where he wast joined by Sir !Moud. with Cruachan, who had run up from the renr, nnd Mosque next. In the run home Sir Mond headed Olopton about a hundred yards from the post, and just held on to win. Cruachaii was a. length and .a half away third, arid Standfust was- fourth.' Xext came Mu^ne and HiKh Pitch, The' first and second horses were both at good prices, Mosque, Lucky Alice, Standfast, and Iligh Pitch all being preferred to 'thorn in the betting. Sir Mond was well ridden by J. Gamnm-k, who timed his effort, to a nicety. Clopton appeared to be staying on a .shade better than the winner, .but. they, were so close together that Ludlow seemed to be hampered in using his whip. Mosque went a good race, but was steadied by his weight at the finish. Liicky. Alice struck the rails going out.of the'straight, and, although, she did riot lose any ground by the bump, it did not improve her chance. ANOTHER GOOD FINISH. There wiis another exciting finish in the Hot Springs Handicap. Muster Armour just winning from Hungikaha and Marochal. Marechnl and Laptown were quickest to begin, and they were soon joined by Lord Val. Marechal looked like winning until a few .strides from the post, when Kaugikabu c.uno on the inside and Master Armour on the outside. The judge declared in favour of Muster Armour by a short iirrk from liaiigikaha, wliu defeated Marccluil by ii h™d. Lnptown was fourth followed by Lord Val and ATomouutui. Lord Val, the favourite, was shocking-
ly ridden, otherwise he would have taken considerable beating. After getting the worst of tho start from the extreme outside, he was never given a moment's peace, with tho result that he could not run on. Marcchal shaped, well for a beginner, and is a likely improver. Master Armour was ut a good price. ■ A SURPRISE. An outsider, Valreina, ell'ectcd a surprise in the Geyser Hack Handicap, for which Sir Kay, Gold Lily, and Leasehold were best backed. Once the field had settled down Valreina was in command from Leasehold. Sir Kay, King March, and Steady Fire, and no they raced to the turn. Yalreina more than held her own in the run home to win by a length from Steady Fire. Gold Lily was three-parts (if ;i length away third, and Indolent was fourth. Next to finish were Leasehold and Sir Kay. Tho winner won well, and Steady Fire came home .solidly. Sir Kay looked a certain place-getter at the turn, but failed to run on at the end. ARAWA PARK STAKES. Eaglet's full-sister, Columba, was backed down to odds on in the Avawa Park Stakes, and she duly scored. The favourite began quickest, to be joined by Lady Musk in the second furlong, when they streaked away and were lengths clear of Titanetto at the straight entrance. Lady Musk then stopped badly, and Columba went to score by three-parts of a length from Titanette. Lady Vane was a length away third, and Queen Arpa fourth. Next came ILieremai and Amber Link. The winner was winning easily in the straight until she shied at something, and Ludlow then had to ride her right out. Lady Musk, a shapely filly by Musketoon, displayed fine speed, and if she had not been bustled so much early she would have filled a place. TOURIST HANDICAP. Refresher and Honiton were most in demand for the Tourist Handicap, and they filled the dividend places, but in the reverse order to which they were backed. Sir Russell and Billikius. moved first, and then Refresher took the lead momentarily, to lose it to Honiton, who led from White Ringlet. Honiton led into the straight from Prince Val, who ran up fast on the outside near the turn, Refresher and Royal Huler. Nothing had a chance with Honiton at the finish, and she won decisively by a length from Refresher. Prince Val was half a length back third, and Royal Ruler fourth. . The winner did it well, and Refresher made a solid effort under his weight. Prince Val weakened after displaying dash, in the middle stages. Royal Ruler made a respectable showing, and may be improved by the run.. . BesuUs-:-*- ' ■ " . I'oluitu HJRhweiprht.
