Midland set Institute a solid task," but the latter were able to | make a splendid response, mainly through Dempster showing a return to something like real form. After compiling a splendid century, Dempster carried on in aggressive mood, scoring at a much faster rate thati previously, and he required only four runs to complete a double century when he tell Ibw to Newman. This big contribution ■was not enough to give Institute victory, as the other batsnieu did not do a great deal in the way of scoring. Only four wickets fell, however, and when stumps wtere drawn Institute were stdl 40 runs short of the 340 (for eight wickets) made by Midland, who maintained, their. unbeaten record. Old Boys performed well agiiinst Hutt and gained a win .ou the first innings. Ronaldson and James had siven them a good start on the first day, an.9 the former kept going on Saturday iiniH he had made 110—a meritorious effort' and one which was. .invaluable to Oltf Boys. Hutt set up a good attack in whith Judd played a very successful part, takipg six wicketa for 92 runs. University scored their second win of the season by-dismissing Wellington for 166. Aim •was ±he principal bowler, and finished up Tvith the excellent: figures of ,five lor jb. University had another strike, and out on IK)I for three, wickets, .Ga-<sig .carrying Hi* bat for 60, Kilbirnie's 408 for five nickels was far too great a hurdle tor Petoite, who were dismissed for 172. Kilbirnkl gave a fine .all-round performance in defeating Petone bo easily on the Petone [Recreation Ground.
The results were:— Old Boys, 284, beat Hutt, 238, on the first innings. Midltand, 340 for eight wickets (declared}, drew with Institute, 294 for four ■wicket.B. . . .. KilbiVnie, 406 for five wickets (declared), beat Patone, 172, on the first innings. Univarsity, 227 and 101 for three ■wickets, beat Wellington, 160, on the tost innings. ~.,. , The ciiampionship points are: Midland, 34- Hutt, 31; Kilbirnie, 31; Old Boys, 29; Petone, '.28; Institute, 25; University, 2o; and WeD'ington, 21.
