CROSSING TRAGEDY SEQUEL

(liy Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The first claim for compensation arising from the level crossing tragedy at Hikurangi on sth April last was heard by a jury to-day. John Frew, a coal miner, claimed £750 from the Northern Motor Bus Company on account of the death of his son, aged 17. The defendants paid £130 into Court, but denied legal liability. Mr. Justice Herdman directed the jury not to consider the claim in tlio light of punishment, but purely as a civil proceeding and to take into account pecuniary loss only, not pain and suffering. The jury awarded £33S damages and costs.
