BAND CONTEST
ABANDONMENT CONFIRMED
Despite the fact that a majority of th# bands entered for the Wellington contest had expressed preference for the aban» donment of this year's carnival, and that the controlling bodies had decided accordingly, quite a strong representatioa; was made that a less ambitious contest) should be held at a later date purely for relief purposes. Accepting the suggestions of a deputation, a special meeting was held this week, and it was decided that if the bands were willing to participate in a contest at which all net profits, neluding prizes, should be pooled for th« earthquake fund, the carnival was to proceed, but at a date about a fortnight later than previously arranged, subject to the convenience of the adjudicator, Mr. J. JV Kelly, of Australia. The chairman of the North Island Brass Bands' Association (Mr. H. D. Bennett) stated to-day that the proposals have not met with the approval anticipated by those who so strongly urged it. Replies to telegraphic messages leave no other course open but to adhere to the first decision to postpone it till next year, when it is expected the event will take place in Wellington. Travelling bands, he said, would require from two to threo hundred pounds to cover the cost of attending a contest, and, in view of all the circumstances already stated, no other decision seemed equitable.
