BOXING

Tho visit of the two American professional boxers, Allen Whitlow and Joey Thomas, is creating great interest in boxing circles, and there is a keen desire to see them in .action. Thomas has height and a long reach, is clever-on his feet, and is likely to prove a very hard proposition, while in addition those who have engaged in training operations with him have reason to know that he is a hard hitter. Whitlow is short and nuggety, of the Donovan type, and like the Taranaki champion specialises in forceful tactics. He promises to be very popular with local audiences. Thomas will be the first to make his appearance in a serious contest, he being matched with Archie Hughes, who has been brought over from Australia, for 23rd February. The box plan for this tournament is to open on Wednesday morning, while holders of preferential booking rights will be enabled to secure their seats the previous day. Both the Americans, together with Blay, Fairhall, Hughes, and Leekie, will be seen in action at the Stadium on Tuesday next, when the visitors have arranged an evening's entertainment in the way of a series of no-decision bouts agaiuts leading amateurs. Apart from the excellent evening's spovt promised tho visitors' action in promoting the entertainment as their contribution to the Eearthquake Relief Fund will no doubt be appreciated. One price of admission is being charged.
