MAN ROBBED
FOUR'YOUNG MEN- GUILTY
3?our young men—Lawrence Ewan Cameron Mitchell, William Edward Ryan, William. Rogers . Kells, and Edward Albert Napier—were found'guilty in the Supreme^ Court yesterday afternoon by a jury of robbing Adam Shaw in Ebor street, Wellington,; on 16th. OctoberJast,year,of £4 .in mdhey »and a gold, watch >and chain, with.-greenstone tiki attached, of a total value of £28. In Ryan's*,case the jury recommended mercy. His Honour Mr. Justice MacGregor remanded the prisoners for sentence. Mr. "S. W. Ongley appeared for Napier and Kells, and Mr. H. H. Cornish for Ryan. Mitchell conducted his own defence. The Assistant Crown Prosecutor (Mr. C. Evans Scott) appeared for the Crown. t ■ The evidence for, the prosecution. was that, jSh&w, /after having had a- number of. drinks.Vwith tie 'accused in different 'hotels* during the afternbon> was hustled up Ebor street,', which is loffDixon street, shortly after 6,p.m. on 16th October, and robbed of-the. articles mentioned in the charge. :',:;.J ■■'.. . . ''f'-'J-'^ ■■ Shaw gaveiis version of what happened, and .a taidrdriver said that he saw the accused Jin the vicinity of Ebor; street about the time the robbery was alleged to have been committed. Statements made by three of the accused were produced by Detective Hayhurst and Acting-Detective Hall. In his statement Ryan admitted having taken £2 1(W of the money. Detective Hayhurst described how the gold watch and chain had been found buried under, tho house in which some of the accused were liviug. Napier denied that ho had been drinking all the afternoon with (lie other men. He said he met them late in the afternoon in a hotel, and his purpose in going into Ebor street was to try and obtain liquor. The jmy was out jn=t undci1 an hour.
