CRUELTY TO A HORSE
Cruelly illtrcatiug a horse by working it while it had sores on its body was the charge preferred against H. 3?. Whiteman in the Upper Hutt Magistrate's Court yes-1 terday, before Mr. T. B. M'Neil, S.M. Sergeant J. W. M'Holm stated that on Sunday, Bth February, he Baw Wliiteman riding a mare with a foal at foot along the river bed at Upper Hutfc. The mare was suffering from three bad sores on its side caused by the girth galling,its; skin. Tne animal flinched away when the place, was touched. Riding on the rough river bed would cause greater pain. _ I Wliiteman, in evidence, said he did not j think the riding was cruel, and asserted that the prosecution was brought owing to his having, on behalf of his employer, ordered the sergeant and a companion to remove a car from private property. The Bench stated that it did not for one moment entertain the idea that the prosecution had been made because of the attitude of the accused to Sergeant M'Holni. After viewing the animal he was quite convinced that the prosecution was jnstifield. The accused would be fined £1.
