THE POPE'S TELEPHONE
The new automatic telephone system inaugurated at the Vatican City is said to be the most efficient in the world. It will have the highest ratio.of telephone! to inhabitants, as there will be 800 instruments for the 500 residents. There will be 30 lines connecting with the Borne system, and six trunk lines for communication with other countries. Special features of the system (according to the Rome correspondent of the "Daily Mail") include an apparatus by which the caller is automatically connected with the exchange if a number is wrongly dialled. Another apparatus registers the number of the telephone making any call, and this will prevent practical jokers from calling up Vatican officials. The telephone placed in the Pope's workroom is of solid gold, decorated with costly enamels of Pius XL's arms. The.- instrument is so made that he can -call any number he wishes, but nobody en* call him unless he desires it.
