THE LAND TILTED

TWO FEET PER MILE

DEPTH LIMITS FOR VESSELS

(By "The Post's" Special Reporter.) NAPIER, This Day. . Investigation by surveyors shows that a definite tilt has taken place between Sale street and the Breakwater. It was stated at a meeting of the executive of the Napier Earthquake Belief Committee yesterday afternoon that the rise was 7ft, whereas at Sale street it was' only 4ft. The grade therefore tapered off in.an inland direction at a rate of approximately 2ft per mile. < Captain H. White-Parsons, harbourmaster at Port Ahuriri, stated in his report that the whole of the roadstead was shown by soundings to be 7ft shallower than before the earthquake. Tho inner harbour lagoon had emptied itself, 'leaving a depth at low water of 7 feet. The rango of tide was from 6ft to 7ft, so that the present high-water gave a. depth of 14 feet. If those conditions remained a vessel could enter the harbour in fine weather with a draught of 12 feet at high water. The entrance to the breakwater showed a depth of 31 feefc at low water, and if the conditions remained the samo a ship with a draught of 22 feet could be berthed.
