CENTRAL COMMITTEE

After the first meeting yesterday, of the Central Committee, which has been set up to administer the funds subscribed for the relief of distress in Hawkes Bay^ the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. <■}. W. Forbes) said that a series of resolutions had been carried, and the meeting adjourned until called together again. "Local committees are to be set up in Napier, Hastings, Wairoa, and in the country districts of central HawkeH Bay," said Mr. Forbes. "The committees will consist of representative men o;f public institutions and local bodies and representative business men, with whowi the Public Trustee will, be associated. The rebuilding of chimneys and tlhe making of houses habitable is being put in hand by the Public Works Department, which is also going into the question of clearing away the debris in thoae cases in which the people are not aWe to do it themselves. Every expedition is being used."
