MEETINGS BEING HELD

The officials of the V.M.C.A. state that further supplies of cigarettes and tobacco are urgently required. In connection with the offer of Miss Dalwood, of Wentworth Falls, to receive 20 children, who. have been rendered orphans by the earthquake, two refugees who are at present with Mr. G. Luff, 126, Owon street, are nurses, and desire to offer their services to attend to the children on their journey to Sydney. Menders are urgently required at tlio Concert Chamber to repair clothing sent in for refugees. The Jewish Women, under Miss Van Staveren, will run the depot to-morrow, and on Wednesday, Mrs. M'Keen and Wellington South ladies will be in charge. The following commodities are particularly needed by the Salvation Army workers at the food depot, Trades Hall, Vivian street:—-Tea, bread, meat (cooked, fresh, or in tins), biscuits, oatmeal, matches, candles, golden syrup, flour, sugar. Flowers, cigarettes, and other comforts are asked for hy the St. John Ambulance Association, Courtenay place, for those refugees receiving medical attention in private homes. At the invitation of the Mayor of Petone (Mr. D. M'Kenzie) a largely attended meeting of Petone citizens discussed on Saturday evening ways and means of helping those who have so severely suffered in the earthquake area. Offers of help were received from the Ngaroma Croquet Club, the Heretaunga Boating Club, the Boy Scouts, and the Central Band. It was announced that the children of'the Wilford School had donated £30, and that the Presbyterian. Sunday school children would make a donation. The Labour Party offered the use of its hall free of: charge and also the use of of its'organisation. A representative of the Gear Company's slaughtermen stated that a donation. from! the men of £30' had been made. ■ The meeting appointed the Mayor, Borough Councillors,- and Messrs. James Kerr, 0. Silbery, and J. W. M'Ewan an executiveI—Mr.1 —Mr. Kerr to interview sports bodies, Mr. Silbery to have charge of a house-to-house collection, and Mr. M' Bwan to arrange entertainments. ' A special reqilest was made to a "Post" representative by the refugees who are quartered in Petone that their thanks should be expressed to all the organisations and individuals who have come to their aid in their distress. They state that they have been overwhelmed with kindness. Several nurses among the'number have expressed a desire to return to Napier to assist as soon as they have recovered from shock. A meeting to raise funds is to be held in the Ngaio Town Hall tb-morrbw evening, at 8 o'clock. The proceeds of the pictures at. Ngaio on Wednesday evening will; be devoted' to the earthquako relief fund. The Lyall Bay Progressive Association lias convened a meeting of residents for Wednesday, at 8 p.m., in the Katea Hall (corner Onepu road and Wha street), to organise a district campaign. ' I A public meeting presided over by the Mayor (Sir Alexander Roberts) will be held in the King George* Theatre, Bower Hutt, to-night, at 8. o 'clock, to consider relief measures. A public 'meeting of residents of Island Bay will be held in St. Hilda's Hall, Humber street, at 8 p.m. on Tues-. day, 10th .February, to consider the launching of a.-relief fund- campaigns ;
