REVEALING THE BEST
—■—-*— Though the Hawkes Bay calamity has imposed on the province and New Zealand a great loss in life and property, there is one thing that may be set on the credit side. The disaster has stirred up the best in human nature. In the shaken districts there have been many examples of heroism, self-sacrifice, and patient endurance. Elsewhere there has been a great revelation of sympathy and helpfulness. After the first shock of the, news the question on everyone's lips was:;" How.can we help?" In a few days the needed. . transport, food and clothing, and medical assistance were made available in such abundance that further offers Were not required. Now an equal generosity is being displayed in contributions to the' Earthquake Relief Funds. With such, generosity, and with courageous; determination, the task of rebuilding the shattered towns may be faced with confidence. Thp people of Napier and Hastings, will be heartened by this proof that; the citizens of other ,towns and districts will stand.behind them and support them in every way in the great labour of reconstruction. With this spirit New Zealand ,may emerge from a period of trial with a new strength which will help to'compensate for the national loss.
