RATE COMPARISON

AUCKLAND AND WELLINGTON

LESS PER HEAD HERE

An interesting comparison of the city rates per head with those of Auckland was made to-day to a "Post" reporter by the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup).

An Auckland newspaper states that the total amount to be collected in Auckland this year, £545,172, is £IC,----686 greater than last year. The amount of •£312,400 has been paid since the rates became due, compared with £301,325 paid at the corresponding date last year.

"The total amount to bo collected this year in Wellington," said Mi". Troup, "is £526,170, of which up to 16th January £354,874 had been paid. From this it will be seen that a larger amount, has been paid out of a smaller sum ito be collected.

"From these figures can be ascertained what tho payment per head of the populations amounts to. Auckland City has a population of 103,000, which, divided into £545,172, gives the rate per head as £5 5s 3d. Wellington City has a population df 108,500, which, divided into £526,170, gives -the rate per head of £4 17s. If the comparison were worked out on the rates charged per £1000 unimproved value, it would be" very much' more in favour of Wellington. ''
