SPRINT TO AUTOPAY
CADLAND UNLUCKY. TO•;OTSS
Autopay put an end- to. .liis term" of outs "since" lie won. the Stewards' Handicap by scoring narrowly in. th? City. Handicap. *Ie had been racing weir at the meeting, but in his "earlier starts .He had been failing at the point" at which. lie : came away and gained the upper }iand onr. Saturday. It, -was. an attractive performance, -.and shows that he has lost none' of the brilliance :that characterised his efforts earlier in the season. . . ■■ . " ;..■■ :'
\ A three-year-old bay : colt by Paper Autopay is bred. . toY go fast,, for his dam, Trebelli 11., is an imported mare by' Thrush, a great English, galloper, from Jiramatica, a St. Simon mare-, from Tragedy, the dam of Birkenh.bnd, wild was imported to the Dominion' by the late Hon. J.. D.Ormond and proved" a highly successful sire. Trebelli II; was the dam also of Sdpr'a,' Ijy Ampelion, who left Iveonui.'a useful performer in' ■' Australia. In winning on Saturday, Airtapii.v incidentally checked the South Jslpinl's supremacy in open sprints-, at Trentham.
First to show- out in the race were Palermo, Blue! Paper, Handy, Ridgemount, Lineage, and. .Autqpayj. "and..as the 'field
lined'out approaching the straight Palermo had charge from Autopay, Blue Paper, Mandy, Ridgemount, Hunting Day, Tentqrden, and The Hawk, and they came on to the course proper in this order. Autopay and Blue P. aper drew ahead and had Palermo beaten at the distance, but Cadland then put in a fast run from the b:ick and Autopay had to be ridden right out to hold him off by a head, Blue Paper being threequarters of a length further away third. Kidgemoimt was fourth, and next were Tenterden, Hunting Day., /The Hawk, Meadow Lark, and Maridy. ..
Palermo was a much better favourite than Hunting Day, next, in demand being Meadow Lark, Cadland, and Tenterden. Autopay was tenth favouirte, at double figures. Palermo was a beaten horse at llie distance, and he was not persevered with. • Hunting Day and Meadow Laik went disappointingly. Cadland, who is in lare foim at present, \ias the unlucky hor'-e m the race, for he wa>j in front a stride or two past the post, and had he come a moment sooner he would almost certainly have" won. Blue Paper showed more determination at the end than she ■ did on Tuesday, and is a _ likely spTt for sprints on the autumn circuits. Compensation, Thursday's winner, was in much less demand' than .■ might have been anticipated, and he ran accordingly. Ridgemount appears to be coining back to his' best form, and evidently- his win at Ashhurst in the middle of the week was no mere flash in the pan.
