FEDORA HAS SPEED

EASY TWO-YEAR-OLD WINNER

Fedora, a two-year-old bay filly by Chief Ruler from the Martian mare Minsk, dam also"-of Carinthia and Currajong, won the Fitzherbert Handicap decisively after leading all the -way. She has had only four races' to date, being unplaced, third, second,, and. now first consecutively, and the quick improvement she has made is likely to continue, for she is very speedy. She is owned by Mr. C. W. Anderson, of Auckland, who'bred her, and she is trained at Pap'akura by J. T. Jamieson. A good start was ' ffected, only Lady Noel suffering, but early it was impossible to d tect the loaders, except that Fedora was out clear in front. Fedora had an advantage of three or i'ou. lengths from Dulen as they came on to the course proper, with Hampden, Distortion, White Squall, and Solvent most conspicous among the others. Over the final couple of furlongs Fedora was never in danger, coming home nearly three lengths clear of Dulen, who was hard ridden all the way down the straight, but could make little impression on the leader. Distortion snatched third money, from Hampden another two lengths away, and best of the others were WHite Squall, Cricket Bat, Teller, High Comedy, and Salt Spray. Solvent was somewhat better backed than Fedora, ivith Dulen very little less in demand. There was a big drop to Hampden, - High Comedy, and St. Roger. Solvent, who drew the rails, did not move out smartly, and she was never more than a remote possibility. She finished well back at the end, but she wls not asked for any special effort when the task hi front of her was hopeless. iDulen went well,'but he never had a chance with the winner. Both Distortion and ; Hampden made good showings, and the former, who is a half-brother by Chief Ruler to Stanchion, should not be long in winning a race. White Squall and Cricket Bat are two others who will probably improve. High Comedy, who drew -Vide out, did well to finish up so close as he did.
