"KEEP PRICES UP"
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—Y^oiir correspondent, Mr. Brailsford, has certainly struck the right note in Biiyiug "keep the prices up," but I think he should have explained how best this could be done. I would suggest that imported articles that are being sold in competition with New Zealand—made goods should have such a .high tariff placed on them that preference will be given to the New Zealand-made- article. I would also advise that British manufacturers of crockery, household hardware, motor and cycle tires (and any other goods that are not at present made'in'New Zeaj land) be offered an inducement to build factories in New Zealand. I do not think for one minute that we could manufacturo for export, but I certainly consider that there is a good opening for factories to supply the needs of New Zealand. There would be no need to reduce wages and the cost of household necessities would remain as at present. I have seen several letters in your paper advocating a reduction of wages for Civil Servants, and 1 consider the sooner the reduction is made the better, but the reductions should only affect those at present receiving £250 per annum and upwards. We might commence by reducing the number of members of Parliament by say one-third. The time has now arrived when party politics should be cut out and the progress of the country put before everything else.—l am, etc., PROGRESS.
