ROWING

By "STBOKE" CHAMPIONSHIP DATES NO FINALITY YET PICTON REGATTA CREWS No decision has yet been reached as to the. date of the New Zealand Championships, which are to bo held at Wellington this season. At the present time Otago want 21st March set aside for the intor-provincial championship eights, and Wellington want to hold the New Zealand Championships on 28th ; February. In vie •of tho close proximity of the dates the New Zealand Council is of the opinion that the time : allowed between the two events —about i three weeks —is insufficient to enable , the crews of the eight-oared boaj)) to . get in enough training. Both tho Wellington and Otago centres have been apjiroached by the council with a view to altering their dates, but so ; far neither has seen fit to make any , change in its plans. As far as Wcl- , lington is concerned the council has ; suggested 7th February as a suitable ; date, but tho centre objects on the , f round that the Provincial Amateur ( thletie championships will create a strong counter-attraction. It is ] pointed out by the. council, however, , that if the races were held on 14th : February, the date of the Petone Trots, • there might be considerable difficulty j in holding the races on the northern ■ course owing to heavy traffic on the , Hutt road. On the following Saturday, ] 21st February, tho American athletes will be competing at Wellington; so ■ that date would be even more unsatis- ; factory than 7th February. Another important reason for the • council wanting 7th February fixed for the championships is that it would en- . able them to invite J. R. Scott, the ; amateur sculling champion of New , South Wales, over to Now Zealand. He ' would then be able to compete at the Wanganui Regatta, on 22nd January, ■ the Hamilton regatta on 29th January, and at Wellington _on 7th February. Scott has intimated that he has obtained the necessary leave, and is anxious . to make tho trip. It will be. unfortunate if the opportunity .of getting this well-known rower over to the Dominion is missed. The New Zealand Council is holding another special meeting on Monday night, and it is anticipated that some ; finality will bo reached over this question of dates. Wellington Club Notes. At Picton Regatta on New Tear's Day tho Wellington Rowing Club will have the strongest representation it has had for many seasons. A No. 2 racing clinker four, built by George Norton, has been bought from the loth Battery, N.Z.A., thus , allowing two crews to bo selected for somo events. This enables new blood to obtain regatta experience. Tho junior four have setled down to work in tho best-and-best boat, and are getting a fair amount of pace out of it. There is still a tendency to roll at the catch, but the drive is quite good. Concentration on steadiness coming forward may eliminate the roll mentioned. The No. 1 maiden crew is a rather rugged crow who are badly in need of good coaching. They possess the reach and strength, but their bodywork and bladework are not up to standard. It soems a pity that the maiden crew have not been allotted a regular coach, as they represent the open class of the club and are the foundation for crews for successive years. The lightweight crews are doing exceptionally well. No. 1, who are also rowing maiden No. 2 crew, are a good though light combination. The No. 2 crew consists of four new men, who aro training hard, and it would not be surprising if they are placed on New Year's Day. The youths are performing well. They aro keen, though inexperienced. The stroko ■ is inclined to get bustled, but the three ; man is very steady, and is the cleanest oar in the boat, G. S. Bright is sculling back to his old form, and should be a serious contender for all-comers. The inclement weather has hindered . rowing here, but all Wellington Club '. crews are going into camp for a week to finish their training in the sheltered waters of the Picton Sounds. The following crows have been selected to represent the club at the Picton Regatta:— i Junior Fours: R. Sherbrooke (str.), ' J. Luke, J. Beasley, and • F. Hinchcliff. ' ] Junior Pairs: R.
