MAIL STEAMERS

PAYMENT OF DUES HARBOUR BOARD'S PROTEST

A protest against mail steamers being given exemption from all harbour dues "was made by a deputation from the "Wellington Harbour Board to the Post-master-General (the Hon. J. B. Donald) to-day. The deputation was authorised to speak also on behalf of the Auckland Board. It was pointed out by the deputation that the Government was calling for a renewal of the mail.service to San Francisco and Vancouver or a new Panama -service, and in the special, contract. conditions for which tenders were called, closing on 14th. January, was a clause exempting steamers while carrying mails from the payment of all hartiour dues, including pilotage, harbourmaster's fees, and harbour improvement rate on cargo. In reply, the Minister stated that as far as mail steamers via Panama were concerned he would see that they paid dues, but he could not promise anything in Tespect of the San Francisco and Vancouver services.
