BOAT AND BUS
EASTBOURNE'S TRAFFIC
The monthly meeting oil the Eastbourne Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Sir. 11. M. Jones) presided, and there were also present Councillors J. I. Rockstrow, E. W. AVise, E. N. Battersby, W. V. Hornig, S. Fisher, I, Hart, S. G. Shearer, and A. Walker. Traffic returns for November, with returns for November, 1929, in parentheses,, were presented as follow:—T.s.s. Muritai: number of round trips, 38 (49); total distance steamed, 570 miles (735); oil fuel used 25.5 tons (33); number of passengers carried, 17,093 (21-,465). S.s. Cobar? Number of round trips, 121 (ITS); total distance steamed, 1815 miles (2670); coal used, 54 tons (76); number of passengers tarried, 13,469 (16,475). During the month tho buses ran 20,09S miles (17,378), Using 2138 (1815) gallons of benzine. The Town Clerk (Mr. C. L. Bishop) reported as follows: — ''The rates have been coming iv fairly well during the past two months, and to the end of November approximately £200 more have been collected than tor the corresponding period last year. "Very unfavorable weather was agaiu experienced during the month of November, the large percentage of windy days being against travel to the. bays. The result was a heavy falling off in ferry revenue, particularly at week-ends. A total decrease of over £200 was shown. Fortunately, however, the curtailed night services enabled the expenditure to be reduced to an amount £300 lower than for November last year. AVith the coming into operation of the summer time-table aa from the 30th November, night boats are now run on four nights a week. It is, however, anticipated that a considerable saving will be made on tho .running for the summer months as the cost of the night boats now provided will be much lower in proportion as .compared with past years. For the eight months ended 30th November, the receipts have fallen by £1100, as compared with the corresponding period last year. The expenditure for the same period has fallen £1500. "The unfavourable weather also affected the traffic on the buses, and for the month the total receipts fell by £30. In comparison with last year this really represents a decrease of £100 on ordinary traffic, as the extra night buses have increased the receipts this year. Now that the boats are being run on certain of the nights each week, the loading on the buses on these nights; will show a falling off. Given reasonable weather, however, there is no reaspn to believe that the receipts for the year will not exceed those for last year. To the end of November the gross expenditure was £300 more than for the same period last year; tho receipts for the same period exceeded those for last year by £700."
