QUEEN MARGARET COLLEGE
Mr. J. T. Martin presided at the '"breaking-up" of Quoon Margaret College, in the Masonic Hull last evening. There was a very large attendance of parents and friends, for whom the pup'ls sang some very charming Scotch sougs. Mr. Martin announced that the board, which was now separated from tho Scots College Board, had decided to increase the accommodation at the school to the extent of some fifty cubicles. The laboratory and demonstration room would also be extended. Mr. Martin mentioned the splendid work of the principal, Miss Wilson —referring par.ticularly to her gift for organisation—and to that of the. staff, I'arents'.Association, und his associates, on the board. . Miss Wilson welcomed Miss, Maiy M'Lean, who litter addressed the girls, and thanked Mrs. Walter Bhmdell for her interest in the Nature collections made tit the school, and for her gifts to encourage tho study of native plants among the girls. ■Thanks were also expressed to Edna Hatch, whose parting gift as head prefect was a cup for iutcr-houso oratory. Miss ■Wilson said that she personally did not want Queen Margaret College to grow much beyond the 200 pupils which the extra .accommodation would enable them to take, as there was a clanger of very large schools, losing their character as one big family and becoming more of an organisation or institution.' The choice of an 'occupation for girls, and other points of interest to both parents and pupils at the end of a year's work, were also dealt with by Miss Wilson in her very able address. Miss M'Lean stressed tho. value of a ."church" school, and elaborated, the two possible meanings of "carpe diem"—"enjoy the present day," or "seize the opportunity." Slie urged on them the pursuit of truth by means of a short parable, and concluded with the hope that they would ;"Jive only to the glory of God. and to the service !df man." The proceedings were opened with ;i hymiij aiid the Rev. R. J. Howie led in prayer. THE PRIZE UST. Form Prizes.—V. S., Patricia' Martin I, Alison Johna 2; V., Sheila, Parker; IV.
