"POST-OFFICE" MAURITIUS

The original plate from which was printed the famous penny and twopenny "Post Office" Mauritius stamps of 1847 went by air recently from Croydort (England) to Germany. It was to be exhibited at the International. Philatelic Exhibition at Berlin, and, according to the "Daily Mail," was! insure*! for £5000. In 1847 a Mauritius watchmaker was given an order to rnakiD a plate and print 1000 twopenny and penny stamps, 500 of each value. He is said to have made a mistake in the plate and used the words "Post Paid" instead of "Post Office." The former issue, the more rare of the two, is now. known as the "Post Office" Mauritius. .
