NO SUBSIDY
RETURNED SOLDIERS PUT OFF
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, 18th December. ' Sixty-two men, all returned soldiers, employed on city works, finished work tins evening owing to a subsidy from the Unemployment Board not being forthcoming. The Unemployment ' Board, through the Press, asked local authorities to put works in -hand before Christinas in order to provide wages to carry the men over the Christmas period. "In pursuance of that urge from the j Unemployment Board," stated the Mayor, Mr. J. G. Campbell, this morning, '' the City Gouneil lodged applications immediately for subsidies on various I works in order to genuinely assist as far as possible. The council put work in hand immediately with the idea of enabling men to earn as much as possible before Christmas, and to employ as many as possible. The works Avero quite unproductive and such that the council under ordinary circumstances would not undertake.
"The council has sent three . telegrams to the board requesting a decision," added his Worship, "and the board has been advised that a number of men will have to be discharged, as works cannot be proceeded with without a subsidy. It is-most disappointing that the council should receive no satisfaction when it has undertaken so much, and had endangered its own finances in order to employ as many men as possible before Christmas."
The .board has apparently ignored the council's telegrams, as no reply has been received.
