WELLINGTON'S TEAM

MATCH WITH OTAGO

Wellington's team to meet Otago in the I'lunket Shield match at the Basin Reserve, commencing at 2 p.m. oil Christinas Day, has been chosen by Mr. W. 5. Brice, and, as anticipated in "The Post" yesterday, several country players are included. Tho team was announced at last night's meeting of the Wellington Cricket Association's Management Committee as follows:— T. C. Lowry (Rarigitikei), C. S. Dempster (Institute), J. !R. Lamason (Old Boys), 10. G. M'Leod (University), K. Crook (Kilbirnie), H. M. M'Girr (Hutt), A. Newman (Nelson), N. Gallichan (Manfvwatn), K. C. James (Old Boys), 15. D. Blundcll (Wellington), and J. Newman (Midland), with 11. B. Massey (Wairarapa) as twelfth man. These players will also be required for the match with Canterbury at Christchurch, commencing on New Year's Day. ' ' A feature of the selection is that, while (here appears to be good strength in batting, the team will have more in the way, of bowling talent than has been the case with- Wellington sides for many years. The need. for. an improved standard of fielding has not been overlooked, although there are one ov two of the selected players who will'have'to'sharpen up their work in the field.1 On present form Henderson, the fast left-hander,, is unlucky,, while Gallichan is to be. regarded as fortunate in gaining a place. If there is a real weakness in the team it is in the fact that only one recognised opening batsman has been included. The selection of a partner for Dempster in opening Wellington's innings was refei'red to yesterday as being a difficult matter. It is evident that Mr. Brice was not fully impressed ivith those offering for the position, and is relying upon one of the experienced players to come up front a lower position on the batting order and take the role of opening batsman. If Lowry does not take the place, it seems that either M'Leod or Lamason will have to partner Dempster in starting Wellington's innings.
