OFFENCE IN T 1928

For an offence committed at New Plymouth in 1928, Harold 'William John James, a clerk, aged 26, has been arrested in Wellington, and to-day, "when, he appeared before Mr. T. B. M'Keil, S.M., he was remanded to appear at Hawera on 19th December. James was charged with the theft of £40 from Newton King, Ltd. Sub-Inspector Ward said that the offence was committed in 1928, and the accused then •went to Australia. Owing to lack of work there he returned to New Zealand recently, and had since been residing in Wellington. He had a wife and two children. When the offence was committed he was cashier for Newton King, Ltd. The shortage was considerably more than £40, the accused estimating it at about £300. Mr. C. O'Began appeared for the accused, who was granted bail in his own bond of £100 and two sureties each of £50. . ■
