REQUIEM MASS

LATE FATHER G. MAHONf

The funeral of the late Bey. Fathei; G. Mahony took place to-day. Solema requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Mary of the Angels Church, Boulcott street. There was a large attendance, including members of the clergy from all parts of the Wellington diocese, as well as from the diocese of Christchurch; Dr. P. F. M'Evedy, president of St. Patrick's College Old Boys' As-, sociation, Mr. D. W. Madden, and members of the committee of the association. His Grace Archbishop Redwood, his Grace Archbishop O'Shea, and his Lordship Bishop Wade (of the North Solomon Islands) were present in the sanctuary. The Eev. Father S. Mahony sang the requiem Mass, the Bey. Father M'Manus, of the Bedemptorist Fathers, acted as deacon, and the.Eev. Father Kelly (Newtown) acted as sub-deacon. Archbishop O'Shea read the absolutions in the church, and officiated at the graveside at Karori. The preacher Teas the Eev. Father W. Schaefer, S.M., of Highdcn, Palmcrston North. "For this corruptible must put on incorruptiou, aiid this mortal must put on immortality." Our Mother Church, said the preacher, taught us to gather around the mortal remains of one of her priests and join with her in prayer for the reposo of, his soul, and to remember tho lessons which she always imparted on these solemn occasions. There were those present who knew of the gifts of grace bestowed on the priest who had gone. They knew of his zeal, the faithful discharge of his ministry, and the example of faith and piety which he gave. In that solemn, moment when they were about to commit the body of a priest of the Church to its final resting place, the Church taught us most valuable lessons. We were taught a. lesson of faith, that we should rise again after death to a glorious immortality. We who lived on this side of the portals of death saw but the gloomy side, but after we passed through the portals of death, what a glorious change! Then the soul enjoyed a perfect life, a life which flowed from the Source of all Life—from God Himself. Well might the Apostle exclaim, "O, death, where is thy sting? 0, grave, where is thy victory?" B\jt thanks be to God, who has brought to us this victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." And, said the preacher, we were taught the great lesson of charity, and prayer for thos« who had gone from nfl.
