INTER-CLUB MATCHES

MORE PRACTICE NEEDED

VICTORIES FOR : BROUGHAM HILL AND 'VARSITY

Interclub matches started last Saturday, and two senior events, were played. Brougham Hill, although ■ not at full strength, had 110 trouble in defeating Thorndon. Mrs. B. P. Adams, Miss D. Nioholls, and Don France were absent from the winning team. The lastnamed player was laid aside by a sudden illness, but it is- hoped that this popular player will make a speedy recovery. The losing team showed want of practice, owing to the grass courts at Thorndon not being available for play until quite recently. Len France, as usual, showed that ho .can adapt himself to any conditions, and the wind did not trouble him to any extent. He had Wilson beaten all tho .way. Sandral had Williams's measure in both sets, and won comfortably.. , Burns, lasted better than Howe in a 3-set match, and took tho last set easily. • Pearee was on top in Isoth sets against Rogers, though the latter "clid better -iir tho second set. Miss -Williams and Miss M./ Preedy had a hard fight in: the second set, but tho former was just too good. Had Miss: Why to been in bettor form she might have won tho second set and the match against -Miss North, but the latter outstayed the Tliorndon player iv a.3-set go. Miss Howe was too sure for Miss Maeassey, although tho latter; improved in thj second set. Mrs. Burke, nee Miss Lapworth, beat Miss S. Preedy easily in tho. first set, but the second set was a fairly even fight. Wilson, and Sandral, after losing' the first set in the doubles at 6-1 against Prance and Williams, got going afterwards, and won the next two .sets.. Ho wo and Pearee combined well to boat Burns and Rogers by two sots to one.. Misses M. Preedy arid White fought hard to win the first setagainst Misses North and Howe; =but after losing it 6%5, faded out of the picture. Mrs. Burke and Miss ■-Williams' 'beat Misses Maeassey - and '■ 5... Preedy' after a good fight in the first set.- Thorndon defaulted two of the; mixed doubles, which does not sound too good for the first match of the season;- France and Miss Howe beat Wilson, and-Miss* M. Preedy, the losers taking the middle sot. Burns and Miss Maeassey looked like winners when they both took tho first set at 6-1 from Pearee.and. Miss' North, but tho latter pair wore them down, and won tho other sets, 6-4, 6-2: Brougham Hill won by 12 matches to 4. University Boats Wellington. The- TJnivcrsity team:; was. full of v dash, ami after a .hard; fight, secured. a well-merited' ...victory, over ; .Wellington by 9matehes to. 7j : ,J?oussell,..reho la.st';ycar. played for Wellington,is hot a University player.'.- Ben O 'Brion was hard pushed' by Smith in'a 3-set .match, and when O-aJI was called in tho third set it was, anybody's match. O'Brien just nosed out a winner. '. lioussell and Reed also had ,a.close match, and the latter- player had a narrow vietpry at 6-5 in the third set.' Ferkiris had a comfortable win from Munn's>.but Long pushed Coombe to a 3-set ■ match, and with a. shade of. luck might, have won ■ the third set, -which was taken by. Cioonibe in good style at 6-5. The ladies' singles were all well-contested, but Miss Sheppard was-the only-Wellington player to secure a win. She beat Bliss Carty 6-3, 6-4. Miss Line, played with great pluck against Miss Tucker, and won 0-3, 0-3. Miss Dyer beat Miss Young, but there was : little between them. Miss Zeislor was too good for Miss Kershaw.- Smith and Roussell gave O 'Brief and Reed a* good, dusting, when it eanio to' the third set, .which was won at '6-1. . The other double was an .easy: win for University.. Misses Sheppard and Tucker hit hard to-win comfortably from Misses Line and Carty. ■ The final ladies' double was an even fight, Misses ;Dyer and Zeisler improving as the match progressed to; win by 2 sets to 1 against Misses Young and Kershaw. The mixed doubles were divided. University .players may well be pleased with their-win^ and it should encourage them to practice hard for the second round, when the team will'be up against Brougham Hill. '•••■"• Inter-club Matches. Looking generally at the senior teams, and assuming that representative teams are to be picked in.tho same manner as other sports, .that is, from, the .players taking part in:-inter-club, matches, one cannot see: a very strong men 'a. or ladies' : team being produced this season to-represent Wellington. It seems all wrong :to the -writer, that players can-stand- out of the inter-club, matches and yet expect to be picked to represent the association. . It certainly does not speak well for team spirit. The association should most certainly, stand by those that give .due consideration to these matters,, and even if it does mean weakening the- team it would-act as an object-lesson to playors generally. The inter-club competition was at one time—not so very doug ago, either— looked forward to each season with a great deal of interest, and the. rivalry between clubs was very keen. Steps should be taken, to revive that spirit for the good of the! sport generally. ■ Intermediate and Tliird Grades. In tho intermediate grade Rongotai and Victoria have made a good, stand, as have Newtown and Technical Collego in. the third grade. Xewtown and Khandallah were more closely matched than the result denotes,.and in a return match the resuit might.be reversed. In' the fourth grade . Wadestowii". boat .Eawhiti somewhat easily, but ; Methodist and Puru both had narrow wins, Ber-. hampore just going down to the former, and Broadway also losing by a very narrow margin from Puru. The fourth grade contest looks like'being a very ■keen competition, ■ and future matchesshould be looked forward to with more than ordinary interest. France v. Italy. . ■ ' In the international contest which is played annually between France and Italy, the former nation won by 12 matches to 1. G. de Stefanp was the only Italian to win a match. He beat E; dv Plais, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.' C. Boussus, who played first man for France, defeated Stefani, 2-6, 6-4, 64, 6-4, and P. Gaslini, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. . Marcel Bernard, the. seventeen-year-old French player who. has been showing fine form this season, promises to be something out of the ordinary. Just lately ho won the. championship singles at Le Touqnet. ..- , ,
