WAR MEMORIAL
THE BRONZE FIGURE
ON BOARD TAMAROA
Weighing about five tons, the bronze equestrian figure destined to'crown tho Wellington War Memorial is somewhere in the holds of the Tamaroa, which arrived from England this morning. Advices received some time ago stated that the figure had been shipped on this vessel, but no information was availablo this morning that this was actually the case. However, no doubt is felt locally that the figure is, on board, although it may be some days before it is landed. The equestrian figure is a 14ft high winged Pegasus in bronze. It represents a victorious youth holding the victor's wreath —a youth, who, in order to rise above mundane or material things, has mounted the Winged Horse of Inspiration to seek something finer and more ethereal. The horse spurns underfoot the victor's spoils of war, and, rising towards the heavens, enables his rider to emerge from the deluge of blood and tears to receive the grout spiritual assurance of Peace, as symbolised by the age-old emblem of the dove with tho sprig of olive. Mr. R. O. Grosse (of Auckland) was the sculptor of the figure, and ho executed the work in England. The casting of the bronze was left in the hands of the firm of A. B. Burton, Thames Ditton. ___________
