BALDWIN MEMORIAL IIALL.
The committee bet up in October, 1929, to raise funds to supplement a donation made by the relatives of the late Henry Baldwin for ,the purpose of, erecting a Baldwin Memorial Assembly Hall at the Hutt Valley High School, gives the following account of the progress of the fund! ', _,' The committee decided to make'the nrst effort '-immediately,' although it was" late in the year 1929,' and issued a circular to parents of pupils at the school and to parents" of children who were likely to come to the school and, with the help of some who were not" actually on the committee, subsequently made a personal canvass' of many of these/ -The Parents' As.sociation1 allocated £100 to the fund; the pupils of the school handed in £28 2s 2d, and the Old 'Pupils' Association £23 13s Cd. With' the , other subscriptions these amounts brought the fund up to £403 9s 4d. It is worth recording that the first week's wages of- at "least one. old pupil went to the fund. It was the intention of the committee at the beginning of the year to proceed with the nest part of their programme—the canvassing of those membei's of the community who were not actually connected with the school. Owiug to , the. financial stringency, however, it was decide"d 16 wait a little. lustead o£ matters improving they have steadily become worse, so that the committee ileems ifc'"inadvii>ab"Je" to""pfoeced with a further campaign at present. It is> \ealihed also that a.request to the Gqvcrnuient for a subsidy would not now be " opportune. The committee feels that the amount raihed, along with 'the amount so generously promised by the relatives ot Mr. Baldwin, making in al] £1400,"will make a splendid start for-ihe next campaign. The committee thanks those who so gcncroiisly sot the fund going at the"first general meeting, to the subsequent subscribers, and to the canvassers for their excellent efForts. '
