CANADIAN TARIFF
A PACT LOST SIGHT OF
(From "The Post's" Representative.) VANCOUVER, 15th October. There was a good deal of hysterical writing and speaking about the iniquity of New Zealand butter, observes the "Halifax Herald." The factwas-lost sight of that the- price of butter in Canada was for the past three years at any rate higher than tho world price. It was only a month or two back when butter; fell. Canadian butter was sold for a 'higher price than New Zealand butter.' At times Canadian dairymen made cheese instead of butter, sold tho cheese at a high price in England, bought cheaper New Zealand butter to supply its place, and mad© some millions of dollars in the process. It was lost sight of that as soon as Canadian butter was on an export basis, that moment the price would fall to the world! price. Added to these misconceptiohs were the tales of huge quantities of butter being landed in Halifax. Two ships wore said to. be carrying nearly trn million pounds, when as a iiisittiT of record they were cayying loss than U\y.
