, : ♦"- ' OFFICIALS ARE HOPEFUL TO-DAY'S GLOOMY FORECAST While-'the forecast issued this morning by tho Meteorological Office is sufficiently gloomy to dasli the hopes of people with an eye to spending a pleasant week-end and an enjoyable time out of doors on Monday, the Meteorological officials are hopeful of an improvement taking .place by Monday. To-day's forecast includes predictions for dull, misty weather with rain, cold tomperatures, and such like. Since last night there has been a change from the westerly typo of weather that has been ruling. Tho depression which crossed the Dominion yesterday developed cyclonic form in its northern portion, and this morning the cyclone centre was located near Napier. Yesterday was inainly fair, in East Coast districts but unsettled and showery iv the western districts. Since last night, however, fairly general rain, has sot in, with many heavy falls over the North Island and on the West Coast of the South Island. East Capo had 147 points, Cape Egmont 72 points, Wangamii So points, West-port 100 points, (i-reymouth 120 points, and Arthur's Pass 182 points. The wind has changed to southerly south of New Plymouth and Castlepoint, with copier temperature's, but strong northerlies or westerlies were still prevailing this morning thence southwards. At Auckland rain .fell early yesterday morning, but it was fine most of the. day, although rain again fell during tho night. Wellington experienced a strong north-west wind and cloudy and somewhat threatening conditions. Some showers fell in the evening, the total rainfall recorded at Kelburn being 18 points. In Christehurch the weather was warm and pleasant with a northwest wind, but a change to southerly during the night brought showers. The weather was dull at Dunediu and rain fell in the afternoon. . Tho forecast is for strong south-west to southerly winds to gales, with mainly fair weather in Westland, but southward dull and misty conditions and further Tain; some heavy falls in Marlborough and parts of tho North Island, but improving- later in western, districts.
