KNOWN BY OUR NOSES
A new classification of mankind, according to the widths oil their noses, believed to bo related to the climatic histories of different races, and ..probably of considerable importance in racial evolution, lias bee,n proposed by. Professor John Cameron, of Dalhousic University, Nova Scotia. The races with .the widest noses and most open nostrils, Professor Cameron finds, are the negroes, the native Australians,, and the former Tasmanian. ratie, now extinct. These ( races live in hot climates, where a wide, open nose probably -helps' to' cool tho blood as the air passes over the. nasal membranes, such as a dog cools himself by panting. The narrowest noses among the major raeea of the woria are found, Professor
Cameron- continues,/in't%'' European whites, but there is a very small 'racial group with still narr^tt'e.r-, -noses and move tortuous nostrils.' vl'hese arc the eastern Eskimos, chiefly inhabitants of Greenland. For races ■ living in such rigorous winter eliinat.es.; as that, of Greenland it obviously is-icjesirable to have long, narrow, nasaJ' -passages, so that tho'extremely cold'filter air will be ; waririea as much as^jjcissibloibcforb reaching the more- delicate; nienibranes of the throat or lungs. •,.■/■ » , : : ' Professor ('Cameron's ilqurtlr:'group, o'£. humanity,'--as. classified by'>nose..Widthj' includes the Mongolians &nd..the Am-, erieaii Indiaius, .which. :raee3:,',are intermediate between, the !s\vide-nosecT ne-. groes and the .'narrow-nbsed'whites.
