Masterton Club. •; , i The Masterton Club held its forty- > ninth annual general meeting on Fri- ■ day night. The annual report showed i that the club membership was well . maintained, being 140 for the season. • The Wairarapa Association held its an- ■ nual tournament on the Masterton ; Club's courts, for which privilege tho club received i£4l 5s 4d. The'commit- ; tee recorded with deep regret the death of its late esteemed patron, Monsignor John M'Kcnna, V.G., who joined the club in 18S7, and had held various offices continuously for forty-one years. The lato Monsignor was well known in tennis circles from one end of New Zealand to the other, and at all times he ga-vo valuable assistance and advice to those concerned in tho goveru; meait of tho game. When* Dean he ! took a moro active part in the ' game than he was able to do later on, and about twenty-five years ago was very keen, both on and off the courts. As chairman of the New Zealand Association's meetings in thos-e days he did valuable work, and was a general favourite with everybody.-, All miss his genial smile" and kindly words of welcome, for he was a man beloved those tennis .players who ■ were fortunate enough to know him. Many ' a player did not mind the losing of a match in the slightest if the Dean was present, for he made the player feel that he had won a, victory in taking the loss as a true sport. The Masterton Club is in a very-J sound position, and the new season promises to be a most successful one. ' The evergreen Mr. H. M. Boddington, the genial secretary of the club, has everything well in hand, and with hard-working officers and committoo, the 1930-31 season should show even . better results from all points of view, as compared With former years. Hutt Valley. : The Hutt Valloy clubs will have, a regular field day on Monday. Being Labour Day, a tournament has been arranged, and as the members of the Hutt clubs are noted for entering freely for such events tup Touramont Committee is in for a busy day. Au early start will be made, and with daylight-sav-ing now in force a full day's play may bo enjoyed by all. Large entries are expected from the sixteen clubs concerned, and naturally the players will be anxious to do their best to bring honours to their particular club. These tournaments, whilst causing anxious moments and hard work for the committee, are very n-eeesary in bringing club members together, and do a large amount of good to the sport in general. With fine weather a most enjoyable time is in store for all concerned. Petone Club. v Tho Potone Club's members rolled up in large numbers last Saturday for the opening of the season. "Visitors from several of. the city clubs were also in attendance. After addresses by Mr. D. M'Kenzic, Mayor of Petone, and Mr. W. Nash, M.P., Mr. W. D. Loader, president of the club, declared the season open. Good form was shown by several players, and the play of Mrs. Sturman, an ex-New Zealand champion, and Miss D. Nieholls, the present New Zealand champion, was closely followed by those present. The club has a large number of young players, who aro most enthusiastic, and this speaks well for the future. As usual, the energetic secretary, Mr. H. D. Souaf, and an ever-willing, committee had all matters well in hand, and- a most enjoyable afternoon was tho result. Wellington Association; The Wellington Association will hold a_ special general meeting of the council in the Chamber of Commerce meeting room, Dominion Buildings, at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday, 30tti October. The first quarterly meeting of the' council will be held the same evening, commencing, at the termination of " the special meeting. As L these meetings will give delegates a full grasp of the affairs of the association for the season, every club should be represented. F. M. B. Fisher has still to be reckoned with in doubles play. Partnered with G. P. Hughes (England), he won the international doubles at the Bad-Ems tournament, defeating the well-known German players, P. Frirtzheim and F. Kuhlmann, in the final, i-G, S-6, 7-5. It was a hot duel. Mr. P. B. Broad, chairman of the Wellington Cricket Association, is at present on a \-isit to the South Island. Both he and Mr.,A. Varnoy (hon. secretary) paid visits to Kelburn Park, Petone Oval, and tho Hutt Recreation ground last Saturday afternoon. At the latter ground they were welcomed by Mr. E. P. Bunny, Sir Alpxander Roberts, and other officials of the club. .Mr. W. Nash, M.P., was also a visitor Ito the Hutt and Petone grounds.
