CARPENTERS' RESOLUTION
At last night's meeting of the Wellington city branch, of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, the request of the employers' deputation that the Government should empower the Court of Arbitration to reduce wages by a general order was discussed, and the following resolution carried. unanimously:
"That this meeting of the Wellington Carpenters' Union urges all unionists and other wage-workers to be prepared to combat the proposal made by the Employers' Association to the Government, viz., that the Arbitration Court should havo power by general order to reduce wages. It further calls attention to' the", time-worn idea permeating the attempt to reduce the standard of living of the wage-earners; that in a time of economic stress the poorest section of the community must carry the heaviest burden, whilst those who have for years been extracting from industry an intolerable toll of hiterest must be saved from the pinch of hard times. It also deplores "the fact that in years past the Arbitration Court refused to cousider balancesheets, capitalisation, and construction of industrial concerns, when computing the amount necessary to keep a. wage worker and family, and thinks the time is now opportunune for a thorough investigation iuto control of industry and finance,' in order to weed out the parasitical growths that are at present impeding ana strangling its natural development."
