DUNEDIN RACES
iPENING DAY TO-MORROW
BRIEF REVIEW OF FIELDS Fields generally better than those of last year are carded for the first day ot the Dunedin Jockey Club's Spring Meeting to-morrow, and the winner is well concealed in most events. The Whigatui course is very roomy, and divisions will ' not be necessary in any of the races. Form has been revealed to a consider- . able extent by the Ashburton, Geraldine, and Kurow Meetings, and runners at these fixtures will probably take the bulk of the prize-money offered. The programme opens with the SPRING HURDLES HANDICAP, of IGS sots; ono mile and three-quarters. st lb st lb Troilus 3" 4 Exlde 9 0 Beauty Light .10 2 Shipshape , 9 0 3lembo 9 12 Star Tractor . 9 0 Gay Fashion ~,99. Troilus showed good form at Geraldine, where he ran second and fourth in the rices won by Pangolin, and as he has probably benefited by the runs, he should be among the hardest to dispose of in the Spring Hurdles. His most serious rivals on recent running would appear to be Gay Fashion and Beauty Light. The latter had a race at the Otago Hunt Meeting, and as he likes the course he may be the one to press the topweight most at the close. Troilus and Beauty Light are a likely pair. TRIAL STAKES, of 150 soys; six furlooes. st lb st lbHomecoming . 8 5 Scgrave .... S 2 Jaloux ...:.. S 5 Tipping ... 8 2 Night Parade S 5 Boherbee .. 8 0 Koyal Limond S 5 Crubenmore . S 0 Skysign .... S 5 Little Duchess 8 0 Solatium ... S 5 Uxbrldge ... S 0 Al Jolson S 2 Insolvency .. 711 Ciimulatlro . 8 2 Kakara 7 H Auster S 2 Lady Dart ... 7 11 Master Palada 7 11 Anomaly S 2 The Geisha .. 711 Standard Rose 8 2 Winsomo Hind 7 11 The Trial Stakes, at special weights, will probably find ,A 1 Jolson a warm favourite, and on his recent showings he should not disappoint his supporters. Jaloux, however, needs a lot of consideration. His last start produced a third to Merry Damon and Paquito at the Canterbui-y • Jockey Club's Easter Meeting, and prior to that he had run second to Hunting Cry in the Great Korthern' Derby. Such performances are far above those of any of the others in the race, and it is in his favour that he has been in work for some time. Master Anomaly, Royal Limond, and Kakara have the best credentials of the remainder. It is difficult, however, to go past Al Jolson and Jaloux. 3IAUNGATUA HANDICAP, of 150 soys; seven furlongs. st lb st lb Gustavo .... 9 2 Academy .... 710 Assemble ... 9 1 Wate"r Power . 710 Some Toff .. 9 0 Bitractor .... 7.7 Impertinence . Sl2 Rlrl .; 7 7 Dumblane 8 9 Ballance .... 7 7 Royal Liraond . S 1 Painting „.. 7 7 Rosewood ... S 1 Good Gift ... 7 7 Ball Dress .. 713 Rotorex .... 7 7 .vTraho • 712 Moy Hall .... 7 7 If Gustavo is to win the Guineas on the second day he should take a power, of beating in the Maungatua Handicap, in spite of his solid impost. Last year Dutch Money carried 41b more to victory; and although Meprisant, the Guineas winner, was unplaced, he had a shocking passage, and this accounted for-his patently poor showing. Those who are likely to test the top-weight most are Dumblane and Some Toff, and if a surprise is coming it may be from Rosewood, whoso form last Saturday was too bad to be true, and Kiri, full-brother to Chide. Gustavo'is the logical choice. . ' , ELECTRIC HANDICAP, of 225 sots ; six furlongs. st lb ' st lb Meadow Lark . 913 Compensation . S 2 . Rin Tin Tin .. 8 10 Spoon 7 12 Praise 8 4 Charmaine .. 711 Waving Corn . 8 2 Full Fling ... 7 5 Greenaway .. 8 2 Red Boa .... 7 2 . Meadow Lark meets Compensation at Sib better terms than at Kurow. and as he was in need of a race this difference may tell in his favour in the Electric Handicap. There are other possibilities, however, particularly in the Greenwood bracket, Praise and Greenaway, who are having their first race for sevei'al months, in Spoon, the last Challenge Stakes winner, who also has been an absentee from race lists since, and in. Charmaine, who ran second to Spoon in the Stakes and is making her reappearance. The best may be Meadow Lark and the Greenwood bracket. . 3IOSGIEL HANDICAP, of 275 sots ; one mile and a quarter. st lb st lb Black Duke ..DO fiigh Court .. S !i ,'Starshooter .. 812 Royal Game .. S a Black Mint .. S 10 Circulation ... 8 i . Town Major ..' SO Evening ....... 7 2 In the relatively small field that is set clown to contest the Mosgiel Handicap, recent form certainly indicates , Starshooter, who has gone up only 21b for his win at Kurow on Saturday. Black Duke, however, meets him at alb better terms, and he is more capable of seeing out a mile and a quarter than many give him credit. For these/reasons he may turn the tables on Starshooter to-morrow^ Town Major seems to have lost something of his winter form, and Circulation is meeting Letter class than she beat at the Hunt Meeting. High Court may need a little longer, but he would be a worthy opponent at his best. Black Duke and Starshooter are the likeliest pair. v MT/BAN STAKES,, of 350 soys; four furlongs, st lb st lb Chief Light .. S 5 Amy Johnson. S 0. Cricket Bat ..8 5 Xmvood S 0. l>ir Weather . S 5 Flower S 0 Irish Chieftain S 5 Flying Amy ..SO Last March .. S 5 Hula Belle ... 8 0 Osslman .... 8 5 Lochlaggan .. SO. Paudowa ..... S 5 Seng For ..SO Ruling Pen .. S 5 Woodend—FairGrecian Prince 8 5 •■ form ally _S 0 The MTLean Stakes gives the first line on southern two-year-old form, and considerable interest will attach to tho running of the candidates in this race. Grecian Prince is well spoken of from Itiecarton, and Lochlaggan, who, it is reported, will- be ridden by her trainer, C. Emerson, is also a promising one from that quarter. Of the Otago horses, those who appeared moat forward at the Hunt Club parade were Ruling Pen, Ossiman, and Last March. Flower- is a Trentham representative, who has the benefit of some racing. Promise has been indicated fry Grecian Prince, Flower, and Ruling 3?en. OCTOBER HANDICAP, of, lliu soys; seren furlongs. st lb st lb ■Koyal Game... fl 4 Smithereens ..82 liascal 9 •■% Some Kose ... 8 0 Caterpillar .. 813 High (iear ... 713 Salmo Salar . S 12 Valdamo 7 13 On Top S 4 Best recent credentials of those engaged ia the October Handicap aro held by On Top, Royal Game, Eascal, and High Gear, and of these the two last named have been on the invalid list over the past week or so. Salmo Salar reads most favourably among the newcomers, for he had a good run at the Duuediu Winter Meeting, with a first and two seconds. Those were his last starts. Perhaps the favourites will be On Top, whom H. Gray will ride, and Salmo Salar. TAIOMA HANDICAP, of 150 soys; ' . • six furlongs. st lb st lb . Jock o' Al Jolson ..... 8 4 Hazledean <j 13 Captivate .... S 4 •. Wie Was .... 9 2 Master Sailing Home . 8 13 Anomaly 8 2 Tracsono .... 8 7 Little Duchess 7 13 ■ Rosewood .... 8 6 Toreador .... 713 Solraar .8 fi Winter Garden 7 13 Quinopat .... 8 4 % "The field for the Tajoma Handicap will probably-be considerably reduced by the pen, and it is'almost certain that Al JolKon will be among the number. Jock o' Hazeldean has a lot of weight, but the field generally is' poor, and lie should bo c-ap-able of making a bold bid for the honours in spite of the burden. . Others with chances are Sailing Home, (younger fiillyister to Set Sail), Solraar' (younger halfbrother to Nightmarch), and Master Anomaly. Perhaps Jock oj' Bazeldeuiraud 'Master Anomaly trill light their, Kurow bsttlc over again.
