* RUGBY UNION FINANCE HEAVY LOSS ON YEAR / [(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 7th October. His Grace Archbishop O'Shea is Spending the week in Nelson. On Sunday he contacted a confirmation service at St. Mary's, and was welcomed by ihe Mayor, Mr. W. J. Moffatt, -at a social last evening. .In. the death of Mr..John R. Delaney fen Saturday, Motueka-has lost one of its.pldest and most respected citizens. Mr. Dolaney, who was in his eightysixth year, was for a long period proprietor /of the Royal Mail coach service between Takaka and Richmond. He is survived by liis wit'o and a family of four daughters and a son. Mi. W. Devenish and Mr. C. Redworth will shortly leave Nelson on a tour ,of the world. Dr., and Mrs. Campbell Smith and family will leave in a few weeks on a .trip to the United Kingdom. The end of season meeting of the Nelson Bugby Union Management Comjnittee was held last evening. At the request of the Beferees' Association it. was. decided to submit tho following remits to the annual meeting of tho New Zealand Union: (1) That lookers be not allowed to lift tho foot ■before tho ball is on the ground in the scrum, and (2) that the advantage rule in. line-outs-be restored. A statement by the treasurer reyealed a- considerable loss on the year's Working, and tho union had been.compelled to withdraw the whole of its reserve fund from the Post Office Savings Bank. The club match gate receipts were only £108 12s, against £.240 last year. Out'of these £64 2s was paid to the City Council for rent of Trafalgar: Park,, and £26, went-to the Insurance .Fund. Representative matches, including the Seddon Shield matchiaf Wstport, . produced £ 298. JEJoweVeSr,: considerable expense is at-. ''tached'to visits by outsido teams and ■'in.' spite of every care entertainment expenses amounted to £54. Players' travelling expenses amounted to a considerable sum, and £33 was spent on school footballs. The gate receipts at matches, it was stated, has been greatly affected by -the; broadcasting of the British _ tour matches. It was decided to write to the New Zealand Union pointing out .that the Nelson Union had lost about £200, and asking if the controlling body could meet them in any way. "What about getting in early in asking for a match with the Australian touring team next year?" asked Mr. B. Edwards. Members agreed that a match should be asked for, and it was decided to write to the Now Zealand Union- on. the matter. It was pointed out th'at,Nelson has not had a visiting oversets' team since 1921. Mr. A. A. Max, -the president, stated that he ■wraldynot seek re-election next year.
