FINDING WORK
GOVERNMENT JOBS
POSITION IN WELLINGTON
The Aeting-Prinie Minister (the Hon. E. A. Bansom) has advised Mr. B. M'Keen, M.P. for Wellington South, that, arrangements have been fiualised with the Main Highways Board to widen the highway between. Porirua and Paremata. This will provide work for 50 men this week. The work will be reserved for married men. In addition, arrangements have been, made for the employment of. sixty mea from Wellington' on road works in the Taumarunui district.
In a statement to a "Post" reporter this afternoon, Mr. M'Keen said: "Unemployment is extremely acute in Wellington, at the present moment, and streams of men come to see myself and also the other Wellington members day after day, seeking employment, but we feel so helpless in the matter, not knowing where to advise, them to go with any hope of obtaining work. Most of the men ,who come are married men. During the past two days married men with asmany as 5 up to 8 children have come to ace me. This work for married, men on the highway at Paremata will mean the maintenance of two homes, as it will be necessary for the men to camp on the job. "Despite what has been done by the City Council, the unemployment position is getting worse, and the figures published by the unemployment bureaux .arc not a correct indication ■of the exact amount of unemployed. Many who interview me refuse to register, as they feel it is useless to do so. The recent figures for Wellington show over 000 men registered.. It would be safe to stnte there are several hmulrecls out of work that are not registered."
